AI Data Centers and Public Trust: What Business Leaders Need to Know

Artificial intelligence isn't facing an innovation problem. It's facing a trust problem.
The technology is advancing at a pace unlike any previous technology wave.
But, public understanding, community engagement, and corporate transparency are struggling to keep pace.
During my recent Fox LiveNOW interview, we discussed AI data centers, growing community concerns, Erin Brockovich's new crowdsourced data center mapping initiative, and why I believe the next chapter of AI won't be defined solely by technological breakthroughs.
It will be defined by whether the companies building AI can earn the trust of the communities living alongside it.
What Happened?
Erin Brockovich recently launched a crowdsourced map tracking AI data center projects across the US.
The significance is not simply the map itself.
It is what the map represents.
Communities across the country are no longer waiting for technology companies, developers, utilities, or local governments to explain what is being built around them.
They are demanding earlier visibility into proposed AI infrastructure projects. They want to understand what is being built, why their region was selected, and how these projects could affect their daily lives before key decisions are finalized.
That should get every business leader’s attention.
I don't view Brockovich's initiative as an anti-AI campaign. I see it as a call for greater transparency.
Residents want to know earlier:
Why here?
How much power will these facilities consume?
How much water will be used for cooling?
Will my utility bills rise?
What happens to surrounding development, property values, and quality of life?
Who benefits economically?
Why are we often learning about major projects after key decisions appear to already be underway?
Whether you agree with every aspect of a crowdsourced map is not the central issue.
The bigger issue is that public trust has become a serious risk factor in the AI infrastructure buildout.
When communities feel excluded, uncertainty turns into suspicion, which then turns into opposition. Opposition can turn into delays, regulation, lawsuits, and brand damage.
For companies racing to build the infrastructure behind AI, public trust is no longer a soft issue.
It is becoming a strategic one.
The Trust Gap: AI Data Centers
Much of the public conversation has become unnecessarily polarized.
Some view AI infrastructure as an economic necessity and a US competitive advantage, while others view it primarily through an environmental or community lens.
Both perspectives are valid.
The irony is that millions of people who oppose new AI infrastructure already depend on AI-powered services every day.
Google Maps. Waze. Spam filtering. Netflix recommendations. Spotify playlists. Voice assistants. Healthcare applications. Fraud detection. You get the idea.
I don't think the real issue is whether AI infrastructure is necessary.
It is.
The polarizing issue is whether technology companies are doing enough to explain why these projects are being built, why specific locations are selected, and how communities benefit.
In my view, this is no longer primarily a technology challenge.
It's a communication and trust challenge.
What This Means for Business Leaders
For the first phase of the AI race, competitive advantage was measured by models, chips, and compute capacity.
The next phase will be measured by something different: trust.
Future AI leadership will increasingly depend on an organization's ability to earn trust from multiple stakeholders. Not only customers, but also employees, regulators, investors, and local communities.
Organizations that communicate transparently about AI infrastructure, environmental impact, governance, and community engagement may ultimately face fewer obstacles as AI deployment continues to accelerate.
In my view, the greatest challenge isn't technical anymore. It's organizational. It's about communication, transparency, and trust.
Success will depend not only on securing land, power, water, and compute, but also on securing community support, regulatory confidence, and public trust. Those are no longer "soft" issues. They're becoming competitive advantages, and trust is becoming strategic infrastructure.
Questions Every Executive Should Be Asking
Rather than asking only: "How quickly can we scale AI?"
Business leaders should also ask:
How are we communicating our AI strategy to external stakeholders?
Are we engaging communities before major infrastructure decisions are made?
How are we measuring public trust alongside technical performance?
Does our AI governance framework extend beyond compliance to include transparency?
What would our stakeholders say if they learned about one of our projects from someone else instead of us?
These questions may become just as important as model accuracy or return on investment.
Final Thoughts
I've spent more than two decades working at the intersection of technology, media, and innovation.
One lesson has remained remarkably consistent.
Every transformative technology eventually reaches a point where society asks harder questions than engineers do. AI has reached that point.
The companies that define the next decade of AI won't simply build the smartest models or the fastest infrastructure.
They'll be the organizations that combine innovation with transparency, accountability, and public trust.
Because ultimately, the future of AI won't be determined by technology alone.
It will be determined by whether the people building it earn the trust of the people living with it.
